Jay Meek (1937-2007)
Jay Meek was the author of eight books of poetry, and other works, including Stations (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 1989);
Windows (Carnegie Mellon University Press, 1994); Good Lives (Dacotah Prairie Chapbook, 1996); and a book he edited with his wife Martha Meek: Prairie Volcano: An Anthology of North Dakota Writing ( Dacotah Territory Press, 1995). He taught poetry in the University of North Dakota English Department from 1984 until his retirement in 2004.
He was co-editor for poetry of The Pushcart Prize, XIII (1989) and of After the Storm: Poems on the Persian Gulf War (1992). In December 2005, he was invited by the nation's poet laureate to recite and discuss his poetry at the National Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Among his many honors are a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Pushcart Prize and a Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship. Dr. Meek died in 2007.
